S. Reinach. Répertoire des Peintures du Moyen-âge et de la Renaissance (1280-1580). Tome Ier, contenant 1.046 gravures. Paris, Leroux, 1905. In-12, iv-710 pages.

The objects which this admirable publication seek to achieve are so clearly set forth in the Introduction and the work itself promises to be of such value as a work of reference that no excuse is needed for a few suggestions intended to make the entire publication absolutely reliable and up-to-date.

On the subject of attributions I will not venture to criticise, but merely record my admiration for the skilful handling of a delicate question I only allow myself to point out a slip on p. 374 where the Head of Christ in the Cook

Collection is ascribed in error to Cima instead of to Jacopo de’ [sic] Barbarie and the National Gallery S. Jerome (p. 566) should be described (as indeed it bas long been officially recognised) as by Catena. Sodoma (p. 638) should be Giampetrino. But it is in the matter of ownership, especially in English collections, that the necessity for greater accuracy arises. It is practically impossible for anyone not in London to keep pace with the constant changes going on, especially in the sale season, and I propose pointing out certain errors in this first volume so as to ensure greater accuracy in this respect in the succeeding ones.
